Nissan Projects 400% Growth After Launching New Locally-Made Models

With new low-cost models and an expanded retail dealership network, Nissan hopes to bring spark to its India operations

Nissan is planning a big turnaround with its upcoming India-focused models. The company is projecting a 400% growth in sales with the significantly expanded product line-up. Nissan sold 91,184 vehicles in India in calendar year 2024 and 99,000 units in FY2025 (April 2024-March 2025). According to a new report from ET Auto, the Japanese automaker is eyeing a four-fold growth in two years, after it launches two crucial products crucial to its existence in our market.

Currently, Nissan sells only two models in India: Magnite and X-Trail. The imported X-Trail is overpriced and out of reach for most Indians, which means the company is essentially relying on only one product. By March 2026, Nissan plans to launch a new B-segment MPV, Saurabh Vatsa, the MD of the company’s local subsidiary said.

The new B-segment MPV will be a seven-seater derived from Renault’s Triber. A teaser Nissan released last month suggested it would look quite similar to the donor model, featuring the same body and lighting and standing out mainly with different grilles, bumpers, and wheels. This would help the company keep the development and production costs extremely low and launch the product faster.

By June 2026, Nissan will launch a new C-segment SUV in India, Vatsa added. The company isn’t referring to this model as the next-gen Terrano, which means it may use a new name. This model will be a mechanical cousin of the third-generation Renault Duster. Unlike the Terrano derived from the first-gen Renault Duster, it will have a unique exterior, with many of the soft parts, including even the headlamps, carrying a different design.

Both upcoming models will be available only with a petrol engine, but Nissan is evaluating CNG and hybrid options, Vatsa revealed. Nissan has also confirmed a new 7-seat SUV, derived from Renault Bigster. To make the most of its product expansion drive, the company will add 35-80 touchpoints to the current 282.

The new products will likely help Nissan significantly boost exports. India is the company’s second-largest export hub after the UK, although it is probably far behind other countries in terms of value since its overseas shipments are limited to the low-cost Magnite. Last fiscal, of the 99,000 vehicles sold, 71,000 were exports.
