We got a glimpse at the new Kuat Piston Ion e-Bike rack with the launch of the Escapod MTB Camper, but the company had the rack on full display at Sea Otter. While the rack looks a bit similar to the existing Piston lineup, the Ion ditches the actual Pistons in favor of ratcheting tire arms similar to many tray style racks like those from 1up USA.

More importantly for e-bike users, the weight limit of the rack is substantially increased, with a full 100lb per tray rating for normal driving. When used on an RV, that weight limit drops to 80lbs per tray, which is still more than the 67lb per tray maximum for the Piston Pro X in normal driving conditions. The Piston Ion is also rated for off-road use, though the weight limit then drops to 50lbs per tray.

Getting those heavy bikes on the rack should be a breeze with the included aluminum ramp, which can be placed on the rack after you fold the upright completely down.

To open the upright, there is a simple lever that you hold down to lift the arm. Then you can ratchet it tight against the tires without using the lever. Integrated wheel chocks should make for more stable bike carrying.

This rack was shown with the optional light kit, which will be available as an accessory along with the license plate bracket.

Like the Piston Pro X (one of the best premium hitch racks), the Piston Ion has the awesome FastFit tool-free system that adjusts to different wheel sizes, and Kuat says the rack will fit 18-29″ bikes and tires up to 4.8″ wide out of the box (along with fenders, though it’s not clear if all fenders will be compatible). You’ll also find the signature PedalPivot which you can use with your hand or foot to raise the rack up or down.

A stainless steel barrel hitch lock and semi-integrated 12mm lock cable are included for security, and it’s all backed by one of the best warranties and customer service in the industry. Currently, pricing is estimated to be $1,289, but with the current market uncertainty, it’s possible that it will be more expensive by the time it’s available this fall/winter.
