Toyota Land Cruiser ROX Concept serves as a wide-open tribute to the classic topless Land Cruisers from the past

Toyota turned heads at the 2024 SEMA Show in Las Vegas by unveiling its most rugged experiment in recent memory – the Land Cruiser ROX and it has now been showcased at the ongoing New York Auto Show. Short for “Recreation Open e(X)perience” this concept serves as a wide-open tribute to the classic topless Land Cruisers from the past.

Designed by Calty Design Research in Ann Arbor, Michigan – the same studio that helped conceive the new Land Cruiser 250 – the ROX concept isn’t just a re-skin. It is a reimagination, cut loose from convention and engineered to be a celebration of the outdoors. It must be noted that turning a closed-roof SUV into a breezy, open-air machine required serious fabrication.

Over 50 per cent of the vehicle was built anew, from custom-pressed body panels to redesigned doors. Engineers collaborated closely with Toyota’s technical center to make stamping tools and structural components for a body that simply didn’t exist before. The guiding principle was exposure: shrink the barriers between driver and wilderness to the absolute minimum according to Toyota.

The cabin can be accessed through skeleton-style doors. Meanwhile, the upper and lower openings replace traditional side panels and a sliding soft top runs the length of the roofline. A fold-down mid-gate lets passengers move between the interior and the bed where integrated tailgate seating and cargo space offer utilitarian flair.

In addition, molle webbing on door panels, built-in safety kits and catch nets for gear highlight the concept’s detail-focused functionality. A 4-inch lift paired with forged aluminum control arms expands the track by eight inches, pushing the wheels out beneath custom fender flares. TRD supplied an independent suspension setup to manage serious terrain and the concept boasts steel bumpers, high-clearance rock rails and D-rings.

Oversized tires wrap around Calty-designed 18-inch billet wheels and the interior is dressed in Heritage Orange leather. The floors are functional, the 3D-printed door sills are made from SLS nylon and everything feels purpose-built for dirt, dust and downtime by the campfire. Although still labeled a concept, the ROX is far from theoretical as it is said to have production-level craftsmanship.
